Hear how Nicole successfully started her own business

Nicole Higgins is a single mother of 4 young kids, had never worked and was looking at self-employment as an option as she needed to look at working around her children and her childcare duties. Nicole started her own sweets business, selling both online and at events/shows that her daughters attend.
Nicole came onto the Fair Start Scotland service in November 2021 but didn’t start looking at self-employment until the beginning of January with Advisor Gordon.
Gordon helped Nicole complete a business plan and a financial forecast using his templates and also giving advice on bank accounts, the ins and outs of bookkeeping and HMRC. Nicole was worried about this part of having her own business but was put at ease by Gordon and his extensive knowledge surrounding this area of self-employment.
Nicole and Gordon investigated the advantages of having a card reader to take card payments at the dance events which Nicole bought and immediately had sales that she would have lost out on if she was only taking cash.
Gordon also helped Nicole with pricing, how to deal with suppliers and the best way to go about marketing her business providing many suggestions on different types and strategies for this – cards, leaflets, tabletop pop ups and pop-up banners.
Nicole is very active on social media and gets plenty of online orders throughout the year.
Nicole started trading at the beginning of February and is appreciative of the support and advice that has been given to her and is absolutely delighted with how her business is going, she has taken on board all the advice given to her and is amazingly proactive with marketing, presentation/packaging of her sweets and admin.
Gordon has said “Nicole is close to the perfect example of someone listening and acting on our advice and I’m absolutely delighted with how much her business has progressed since she started trading.”
Nicole has said that the business has changed her and her children’s lives and she is really enjoying it so far.
