The Sycamore Tree at HMP Hollesley Bay

This is the 'Sycamore Tree' which was painted by learners on our Painting & Decorating course at HMP Hollesley Bay. The tree was painted for the prison chapel in order to create not only a focal point, but also a thought provoking statement. On the tree the men are able to write anonymous pledges, for example 'I will gain work and make a better life for my family'

The Sycamore Tree is also the name of victim awareness course which is held for the men and sees real victims of crime visit the prison and offer their perspective on events that have happened to them. The idea of creating the tree to be used for pledges came from one of our learners. He said he saw himself as the seed that had blossomed and grown into a tree, with birds wanting to nest within it as they were comfortable with him and supported him as a changed person.

Painting and decorating learners were asked to paint the tree which had been designed by the learner and inspired by an image he had seen in a book.  The tree is now proudly displayed in the chapel entrance with the examples of men’s pledges annotated on it.

This is a perfect example of how art, education and rehabilitation come together to create real impact. Initiatives like this have shown significant positive impact on the process of offender reform, facilitating skill development, fostering creativity, and promoting personal growth, ultimately paving the way for a more successful reintegration into society.
