Unlocking Confidence Through Self-Employment Workshops
At HMP Drake Hall 17 women took part in our hair and beauty self-employment workshops – a new initiative taking place to promote self-employment opportunities to prisoners. PeoplePlus delivers education in 22 prisons across the country, and we are proud to offer our 30 year experience in self-employment advice and expertise into our prison population.
Over the span of two weeks, the women at HMP Drake Hall were able to learn about essential aspects of entrepreneurship, including business planning, cashflow management, marketing strategies, and bookkeeping. Guiding them through the workshops was our experienced Business Advisor Hasina, whose expertise proved instrumental in shaping their newfound ambitions.
What sets these workshops apart is their profound impact on the participants. Many of these women had never considered self-employment as a viable option prior to joining the workshops. However, as they absorbed knowledge and drew inspiration from the workshops, their perspectives began to shift. Now, each of them contemplates a future in self-employment within the hair and beauty industry, fuelled by newfound confidence and determination.
One participant poignantly expressed, "The workshops have given me the confidence to believe I can become self-employed—brilliant and beneficial." Another praised Hasina's teaching prowess, stating, "I enjoyed all of this course, and the tutor explained everything in detail."
The workshops concluded with a presentation ceremony attended by the Governor and Deputy Governor of HMP Drake Hall. Here, the women received their well-deserved certificates of completion, crediting their newfound skills.
PeoplePlus Business Advisor and dedicated tutor Hasina was not just an educator but also a source of inspiration for these women. Her pride in witnessing the positive changes was evident as she remarked, "Thank you for the opportunity; I really enjoyed it. It was a very self-fulfilling experience."
The women's appreciation for Hasina extended beyond words, as they presented her with a heartfelt thank-you card and used their talents to pamper her with hair, nails, and even gifted her a makeup palette, all purchased with their hard-earned money within the prison. This profound gesture serves as a testament to Hasina's dedication and the genuine impact these workshops have had on the lives of these women.
